Parisian actress and dancer, Leïla Gaudin, returns to NYC and TheaterLab with a new solo piece, That hour of the morning, inspired by the cultural differences and similarities she's come across during her travels and influenced by the different techniques she encountered, amongst them Jazz Acting.
Trinity University alumnus, Georgia Luce started her performance career in Portland, Oregon. There she worked in various theaters as an actress and a scenic artist. In 1997, Georgia co-founded the critically-lauded Liminal Performance Group with fellow Trinity alumni. She helped conceive, act, and execute a decade run of innovative original works and re-imaginings of some of the greats. One of her favorites was playing Anna II in an "electronic opera multimedia peep-show " version of Brecht /Weill 's Seven Deadly Sins. Since moving to New York, Georgia has been pleased to work on interesting projects such as: Iph Then for Incubator at Ontological Hysteric Theater, Appearance - A Suspense In Being at Theaterlab, the group disco section of Nature Theater of Oklahoma's, Poetics: a ballet brut, and improv at UCB. Georgia is interested in the basics of action, the vitality of live performance, and how to merge modern technology, such as social networking and crowd sourcing, with performance.
No matter where in the world you live, it is sometimes difficult to convince yourself to leave the house. Some people press snooze 19 times, others look for their keys for half an hour, some decide it’s the best moment for a prayer. That hour of the morning is the story of a woman who is trying to go to work, but can’t make it through the door. Trapped between intimate needs of the private self and social obligations of the public self, her internal struggle manifests in an absurd battle between mind and body, will and desire, foot ware and God. Will she make the connection in time to make her connection? Leïla has teamed up with past collaborator, Georgia Luce, to develop a second movement to the piece for an ensemble. Working across languages and disciplines, they deconstruct and reconfigure the movement and sound of That hour of the morning, revealing the global nature of daily life. Together, the two pieces propose a hysterically truthful moment of human absurdity. Leïla Gaudin started theatre at the conservatory in Paris, and discovered interdisciplinary work in the south of France with Werner Büchler. It’s in New York that she delves into physical acting, working with Carlo Altomare (Appearance - A Suspense In Being at Theaterlab),as well as Katie Workum and Will Rawls (Ark from a country once forested at DTW), amongst others. She creates her first solo, 7pm, for PS122 before going to India where she studies baratanatyam, a more traditional kind of dance theater. Back in Paris, she creates cette heure du matin (That hour of the morning) and performs it in various French and Belgium festivals and at the Regard du Cygne in Paris.
